  • Highs More practical than the A6 sedan, upscale styling, smooth-running V-6 engine.
  • Lows Steep base price, distracting infotainment setup, wants to be an SUV.
  • Verdict It offers the same luxury and tech features as its sedan counterpart, but its large rear cargo area and roof-top side rails, give the A6 Allroad a leg up in the practicality department.
By Drew Dorian and Connor Hoffman

The ruggedized 2020 Audi A6 Allroad wagon has a bit more off-road capability than the standard A6 sedan thanks to an adjustable air suspension, a lifted ride height, and features such as hill-descent control. Inside, occupants are treated to the same comfortable, spacious, and contemporary cabin as the Allroad's sedan sibling, but with extra cargo space in its elongated rear compartment. The exterior features gray-plastic lower-body cladding to help the A6 Allroad look the part, though a full-body paint option is available. An Allroad-specific grille and 20-inch wheels distinguish the Allroad wagon from its sedan sibling.

What's New for 2020?

The Audi A6 Allroad has returned to the U.S as a 2020 model. It will start off with a Limited Anniversary Edition that features a Gavial Green paint job and a Sarder brown Valcona leather interior that pays homage to the original A6 Allroad that was sold in the United States from 2000 to 2005.

Pricing and Which One to Buy

The base Premium Plus trim is well-equipped right from the start with items such as 20-inch wheels, a reconfigurable digital gauge display, in-dash navigation, a 16-speaker Bang & Olufsen stereo system, a panoramic sunroof, leather upholstery, and a four-zone automatic climate control system. Upgrading to the more expensive Prestige adds even more tech and safety features, but it's all stuff we could easily live without.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

The 2020 A6 Allroad is powered by a turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 that produces 335 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. A seven-speed automatic transmission and Audi's Quattro all-wheel-drive system are both standard. At our test track, the A6 Allroad proved to be slightly slower than the A6 sedan with the same powertrain. Still, it managed a brisk 5.2-second zero-to-60-mph time. The A6 Allroad rides on an adjustable air suspension, which provides a plush ride and even greater control when venturing off-road thanks to a mode that lifts the car up an additional 1.2 inches.

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

The EPA estimates that the A6 Allroad will return 20 mpg in the city, 26 mpg on the highway, and 22 mpg combined. The Audi's chief rival–the Volvo V90 Cross Country–carries slightly higher highway and combined ratings but the EPA rates it at the same 20 mpg in the city. Over our 200-mile highway fuel economy test route, the A6 Allroad delivered a stellar 34 mpg result while the V90 Cross Country returned only 29 mpg.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

The A6 Allroad's interior is comparable to the standard A6 sedan, meaning it's sleek, modern, and well-crafted from high-quality materials. The majority of the car's secondary controls, including climate control and driving modes, are adjusted via a touchscreen on the center console. This dual-screen setup works well and provides haptic feedback, but some drivers might find it distracting. The A6 Allroad offers more cargo space than the A6 sedan, which fit six of our carry-on suitcases in the trunk. The Mercedes-Benz E-class station wagon and the V90 Cross Country fit 11 and eight carry-on cases, respectively, inside their cargo areas with their rear seats in place; the Allroad fit nine cases behind its rear seat and held 20 in total with the seats stowed.

Infotainment and Connectivity

In addition to the digital climate-controls screen, the A6 Allroad features a secondary infotainment display that sprouts from the dashboard. Audi's infotainment software can be customized to suit the needs of each driver's tastes. An 8.8-inch display is standard and it features navigation, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and onboard Wi-Fi as standard features. Audi's Virtual Cockpit digital gauge display and a larger 10.1-inch infotainment screen are both optional. A 10-speaker audio system is standard, but Audi offers a 16-speaker Bang & Olufsen 3D premium sound system as an option.

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

Overall Safety Rating (NHTSA)

View Crash Test Results

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) hasn't completed safety testing on the A6 Allroad, but the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has and named it a Top Safety Pick+ for 2020. Audi offers a suite of driver-assistance features as standard, which includes automated emergency braking and lane-departure warning. Key safety features include:

  • Standard automated emergency braking
  • Standard lane-departure warning
  • Available adaptive cruise control

Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

Audi offers an average standard warranty, but it lacks the lengthy complimentary scheduled maintenance plan that comes with the V90 Cross Country. Station wagon buyers who don't need the A6 Allroad's extra ground clearance might find the Jaguar XF Sportbrake provides an even better value when it comes to warranty coverage.

  • Limited warranty covers 4 years or 50,000 miles
  • Powertrain warranty covers 4 years or 50,000 miles
  • No complimentary scheduled maintenance
